- Order of Tibetan Buddhism
Since the mid of 11th century,Tibetan Buddhism entered a form sect era,appear Nyingma,Kagdang,Sakya,Kagyu,Gelug,Xijie,Jueyu,Juenang,Guoza,Xialu and so on sect,influence has been greater have 5 sect.
Nyingma Order(red sect) which formation in the 11th century BC was the oldest sect in Tibet. The sect remains much more indigenous Bon religion features than the other sects, Nyingma Order lamas believe that one’s mind is pure and through the Buddhist cultivation to prevent disturbances outside, one can be Buddha. Another feature of this sect is it has maximum deities compared with other sects,so call it Nyingma(in Tibet,Nyingma means old ).Because Nyingma Order lamas wear red robes and hats, it was also called Red sectso .
Kagdang Order was found in 1056.In Tibet,"Kag" means Buddha,"dang" means teaching,"Kagdang" means Buddha’s deeds and tuitions should be doctrines of cultivation.Kagdang Order whose monks major in Xianzong advocated learning Xianzong first and then learning Mizong ,the methods of teaching was spreads widely,Its impact on Tibetan Buddhism was profound. Gelug Order rise in the 15 century,monks and temple of Kagdang Order remodel into Gelug Order ,and the Kagdang Order disappear in Tibet.
Sakya Order (Colored Sect) was found in 1073.Since the wall of this monastery was painted with stripes of red,white and black to symbolize the three Bodhisattvas of Manjusri,Avalokitesvara and Vajrapani,the order was also known as the “Colored Sect”.This order branched out into two schools,one passed down through family lineage and the other through recognized legitimacy.The order was at its zenith at the time when China was under Mongol rule during the latter half of the 13th century.Its fifth patriarch Chogyal Phagspa was conferred Imperial Precceptor by Khublai Khan and was recognized as the political leader of Tibet.For the first time.Tibet was united under a joint spiritual and political authority.
Kagyu Order(White Sect) was found in the 11th century BC,Its teaching was passed down through oral transmission,from which derived the name Kagyu.Self cultivation was greatly emphasized and the greatest objective was to achieve a state of Buddhahood known as Mahamudra,or the Great Seal.From the Kagyu derived many sub-orders,each having its own head monastery.For instance,the Tsurphu Monastery to the north of Lhasa has been the head monastery of the Karma Kagyu sub-order.Since Milarepa adopted the Indian custom of wearing white during his meditative practice,this order was also known as the “White Sect”.
Gelug Order (Yellow Sect) ,the order of Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama, also called Yellow sect since they wear yellow hats, began with Tsong Khapa, a great Buddhist reformer, in 1407. It absorbed Kahdampa and carried on Atisha’s tradition. It stresses strict discipline and study of scriptures. Its successful reform made it dominant in Tibet after the 17th century, leaving other sects to play a minor role. It has 6 main monasteries, named Ganden Monastery, Ta’er Monastery, Drepung Monastery, Labrang Monastery, Sera Monastery and Tashilhunpo Monastery.
